Man shoots daughter dead, injures wife in Hoshiarpur village

Had escaped from police custody in June last year while being produced in court in a drug-peddling case

HOSHIARPUR : A proclaimed offender wanted in a drug peddling case, allegedly shot dead his daughter and injured his wife on Thursday.

The accused was identified as Major Singh, 40, a resident of Denowal Khurd village.

Police said the accused came to his house in Basti Sansian at around 7:30pm on Thursday night and opened fire at his family with a revolver.

“His 17-year-old daughter Priya died on the spot whereas his wife Rajni got hit by two bullets in her chest and arm. The accused’s 7-year-old daughter Priyanka hid under the bed to save herself,” senior superinten­dent of police (SSP), J Elanchazhi­an said.

After the incident, people in the neighbourh­ood saw him leaving his house on a motorcycle.

The SSP said that Major had escaped from police custody in June last year while he was being produced in a court for involvemen­t in a drug peddling case. Six cases of drug smuggling, one case each of rape and theft are pending against him.

On Thursday, police had arrested his mother Mindo with 40gm of narcotic powder.

“Three cases of drug smuggling are also going on against his injured wife, who was out on bail,” the SSP said.

He said that prima facie it appears to be a case of illicit relations.

“We have started the investigat­ion but the injured is not fit to record her statement,” he said.

Meanwhile, Garhshanka­r SHO Gagandip Singh Ghuman said a case under Section 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act was registered against the accused on the statement of his neighbour Balwinder Singh, who had taken the injured to the hospital.
