Gang of drug smugglers busted, two arrested

JALANDHAR: Police on Saturday claimed to have busted an interdistr­ict gang of drug smugglers by arresting two of its members with 270gm of drug powder, three pistols, ₹1.05 lakh and a car.

Addressing a press conference here, commission­er of police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that he got a tip-off that a gang of drug smugglers was operating in the city. Acting on the tip-off, nakas were set up at different places across the city.

He said during a special checking near the Hathi Gate at Sofi Village, police arrested Sunny Wehmi, a resident of New Geeta Colony in Jalandhar, and recovered 270gm of drug powder, a .32 bore pistol with five live cartridges, a .315 bore pistol with three live cartridges, a Honda City car and ₹1.05 lakh, from his possession.

“Sunny is into the drug trade since 2012 and three cases have already been registered against him under various provisions of the NDPS Act at division numbers 2 and 7 of the city and one at Mehta police station in Amritsar district,” the CP said. Sunny used to bring drugs from Amritsar and supply it in the city, the CP said.

Bhullar said during investigat­ion, Sunny revealed that his accomplice Rahul also had a weapon, which he had bought from Uttar Pradesh at a cost of ₹25, 000. Following the informatio­n, the police arrested Rahul from the T-point near the Verka Milk Plant and recovered the weapon from his possession.

780GM CHARAS, 850 INTOXICATI­NG TABLETS RECOVERED FROM JAIL

KAPURTHALA: Two days after police registered a case against two gangsters for using mobile phones in the Kapurthala modern jail, authoritie­s on Saturday booked two prisoners for ‘selling drugs’ in the jail. The jail authoritie­s recovered 780gm of charas, 850 intoxicant tablets, a mobile phone, three batteries, a sim card, a data cable and two internet dongles, which were concealed under the sewage hole cover.

Those booked have been identified as Jaswant Singh of Atti village and Manoj Kumar of Gazi Gulla locality in Jalandhar.

A senior jail official said they got a tip-off that drugs were smuggled into the jail and an inmate was going to sell it to other prisoners, following which a raid was conducted in the cells.

As per the FIR, the jail staff, during the checking of barrack number 6 in Phase 1, found Jaswant concealing a polythene bag under the sewage hole cover.

The team found a mobile, three batteries, a sim card, a data cable, a dongle, 41 packets of charas and 850 intoxicant tablets. Jaswant told the police that he bought them from Manoj. Jail assistant superinten­dent Gurdev Singh recommende­d the Kotwali police to register a case against both the accused under Sections 22/61/85 of the NDPS and Section 52-A of the Prisons Act.
