- Anil Sharma

AMRITSAR: A 40-year-old woman hacked the wife of his tenant — with whom she had illicit relations — and her minor daughter to death in the Mohkampura area of Amritsar on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as Suman, 28, and Riya, 5. Suman’s husband Deva Nand, 30, an Indo-tibetan Border Police constable, was not at home when the incident took place.

The accused Kamlesh has been arrested. Additional deputy commissioner of police (city 2) Harpal Singh said: “As per our investigation, Kamlesh and Deva Nand were involved in illicit relations. Suman came to know about the affair and had been vehemently opposing it. Kamlesh wanted to get rid of the woman so she killed her along with her daughter around 1 am. She said the weapon used in the crime was given to her by Deva Nand. We have recovered the weapon.”

Amritsar police commissioner Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill said: “We have registered a case under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Kamlesh at the Mohkampura police station.”

“Deva Nand has been booked under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy). He is absconding and efforts are being made to nab him,” he added.

The accused had buried the child’s body that was retrieved in the presence of a duty magistrate, said police.

“We have also arrested Kamlesh’s husband Ram Tirath, 45, for helping her to dispose of Suman’s body. Tirath used a rickshaw for helping his wife to throw the body near a pond in Mohkampura,” said ADCP Harpal Singh.

Deva Nand along with his wife and daughter had been living at the first floor of the house for the past four months.

“Around 4 am, I was woken up by my wife. She told me that she has killed Suman and Riya,” said Tirath, a labourer, who has three teenaged sons.
