(DDA), said, “Following the information about burning of crop waste at four places in Sangohi and Darar villages, the department filed police complaints for registration of FIR against four farmers.” The erring farmers, identified as Jaspal Singh, Devender Singh, Karanjit Singh of Darar village and Iqbal Singh of Kurali village, have been booked under IPC section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).

The matter of stubble burning came to light when Karnal DC Vinay Pratap Singh visited some villages to aware the farmers about the bad impact of burning of crop residue and noticed violations. He called the officials of the agriculture department there and asked them to take action against the erring farmers. Pratap said there were clear directions for action against the farmers found burning the crop residue and he has also warned the officials of the agriculture and revenue departments of stringent action if they fail to report such violations in their respective areas.

Notably, agriculture department officials said about 10 villages of Indri block in Karnal are notorious for stubble burning as farmers there sow early varieties of paddy and they burn the crop residue to prepare the fields for next crop of vegetables.

However, no case of stubble burning was reported in the nearby districts of Kurukshetra, Kaithal and Yamunanagar. “We have already started an awareness campaign and officials have been deputed to monitor the situation,” said Surender Yadav, DDA, Yamunanagar.
