TARN TARAN: Police have arrested two persons for their alleged role in the murder of a couple at Naushehra Dhala village, 40 kms from the district headquarters, here on Monday.

A young married couple was hacked and shot dead outside their house in the village on September 15. Police had said the relatives of the woman, Amanpreet Kaur, 23, who belonged to Gehri village, had committed the crime as they were opposed to her love marriage with Amandeep Singh, 24, a farmer.

The arrested men were identified as Gurbhinder Singh and Manjeet Singh of Gehri village—brothers of Amanpreet Kaur.

Superintendent of police (Sp-investigation) Jagjit Singh Walia while addressing a press conference said the accused were arrested during a raid. He said raids were being conducted to nab other accused.

Besides the two arrested accused, police had booked Gurbhinder’s brother Surjit Singh and his father Mewa Singh, Harwinder Singh and Amarjit Singh along with five unidentified persons.

Walia said during the interrogation of arrested accused, it was found that they had been in contact with some gangsters. Walia said, “Gurbhinder confessed that deceased Amandeep Singh was his friend. Gurbhinder had been keeping grudge against Amandeep after he married to his sister. He along with other accused killed the couple in the name of honour.”

The couple was killed while they were returning home after paying obeisance at Gurdwara Bir Baba Budha Sahib near Chabhal town. The accused, three of whom are cousin brothers of the woman, forced the couple to sit in their car at Rajatal Link road, a km from Naushehra Dhala village, where the crime took place.

Amandeep had died on the spot while Amanpreet was declared brought dead at a hospital in the district.
