TARN TARAN : One of the two accused arrested with 310gm heroin and ₹17 lakh of drug money from a Taran Taran village had been in contact with some Pakistan-based smugglers, police said on Wednesday.

Balwinder Singh alias Pehalwan of Amishah village and Shamsher Singh alias Shera of Daliri village in Tarn Taran were arrested from Bhagiari bridge during a barricading by crime investigation agency (CIA) wing of Tarn Taran police on Tuesday.

Police had recovered 210gm heroin from Balwinder’s possession while 100gm heroin was seized from Shera.

On Wednesday, both accused were presented before a local court, which sent them to twoday police remand.

Superintendent of police (Sp-investigation) Jagjit Singh Walia said, “Preliminary investigation has suggested that Balwinder had been in contact with some Pakistan-based smugglers. He had been working as a drug peddler for the last few years. He had been supplying heroin to five districts. He also had links with some gangsters and had given shelter to many criminals in the past.” Another police official privy to the development said, “Balwinder had been getting heroin from across the border. Police are trying to find out the place from where he used to pick up the contraband. Some more men had been aiding Balwinder and efforts are being made to nab them.”

The duo was booked under Sections 21-29-27-A-61-85 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
