SAYS WON’T LET CM TO INTERVENE IN IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LAW IN PUNJAB

AMRITSAR: The leaders and workers of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday protested against the statement of chief minister (CM) Amarinder Singh on implementation of Citizenship Act in Punjab, at Hathi Gate here.

The protesters burnt his effigy and raised slogans against the Punjab Congress. They said they would not allow the CM to intervene on implementation of newly amended Act.

Last week, the chief minister had stated that Punjab will not implement new citizenship law. He had dubbed new amendment direct assault on the country’s secular character.

The protest was led-by BJP’S former state minister Dr Baldev Raj Chawla. He said, “With amendment in the Citizenship Act, persecuted communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will easily get India’s citizenship. It was long-pending demand of Hindu, Sikh, Christians, Parsi, Jains and Buddhist communities of these countries. However, the Punjab government has decided to act against the interest of persecuted communities. Punjab BJP will not allow this and amended Act will be implemented in Punjab like other states.”

He said, “The law will not have any effect on Muslim community. Congress and some similar organisations are trying to divide the country.”

BJP state secretary Suresh Mahajan, general secretary Dr Raman Chawla, district president Janardan Sharma were among other prominent leaders present during the protest.
