Man dupes woman on pretext of marrying her, booked

JAMMU: The Crime Branch on Tuesday produced a chargeshee­t against a man who duped a Jammu-based woman of her money on the pretext of marrying her.

The accused, Vikram Singh Barnala of New Delhi, had approached the victim through a matrimonia­l website.

The Crime Branch has registered a case against him under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestl­y inducing delivery of property),465 (punishment for forgery),467( Forgery of valuable security),468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471(using as genuine a forged) of the IPC.

The victim told the police that Singh had introduced himself as a businessma­n from London. He said his wife had died in a road accident and that he wanted to settle in India.”

“Subsequent­ly, both of them shared their email addresses and contact numbers. The accused told the woman that he will be coming to India for meeting some clients and he would meet her parents on the trip.the accused told the complainan­t that he will be sending her a gift pack of gold jewellery, an Apple iphone, laptop, perfume and foreign currency through a courier service, for which she will have to pay a small amount of custom duty,” a spokespers­on said. Believing the accused, the woman initially transferre­d first instalment of money in one of the account numbers of the fraudster, purportedl­y as custom duty.

However, when the accused demanded more money for releasing the gifts, the complainan­t realised that something was wrong and lodged a complaint with the Crime Branch in Jammu. The spokespers­on said a charge-sheet against the accused was produced in before the subjudge court, Jammu, on December 24.
