CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday expelled its Rajya Sabha MP and veteran leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and his legislator son Parminder Singh for ‘anti-party activities’.

The decision was taken during SAD’S core committee meeting that was presided over by party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal here, said senior leader Daljit Singh Cheema.

A day before this decision, former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal at a rally in Sangrur, the stronghold of Dhindsas, said the father-son stabbed the party in the back. “The core committee has only endorsed the demand of party workers who vociferously demanded Dhindsa’s expulsion at Sangrur rally. The SAD never wanted the father-son duo to be out of the party. However, the core committee was left with no choice but to endorse the demand of workers who were fed up with their anti-party work,” added Cheema.

Dhindsa had resigned as SAD secretary general and core-group member in September 2018 and opened a front against the party leadership, especially Sukhbir. The SAD core committee on January 11 had suspended the Dhindsas. At that time, Dhindsa

Senior had said: “Sukhbir and his coterie have taken over the party completely.”

He said like them many other leaders were feeling suffocated, but they were yet to speak out. Dhindsa and his son, who is legislator from Lehra, have resigned from key posts recently saying the party was not run in a democratic manner.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Dhindsa Senior said: “I was aware that this would happen sooner or later . This will strengthen my vow to bring back Akali Dal to its old glory.”
