JAMIA MILLIA SHOOTING: MAN WHO SOLD GUN TO MINOR HELD

NEW DELHI : A 25-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh has been arrested for selling a country-made pistol to the 17-year-old who fired at protesters outside Jamia Millia Islamia on Thursday, the police said on Monday. A postgradua­te student at Jamia was injured in the firing, and the shooter was caught by the police.

Police identified the seller as Ajeet, who is pursuing a course from a university in Uttar Pradesh to become a teacher. He was picked up from his home at Sahajpur village in Aligarh district of UP on Sunday. “We have booked him under appropriat­e sections,” said Dcp(crime) Rajesh Deo.

“He has completed his graduation in arts and is pursuing a BED degree course from a university in Uttar Pradesh,” said Deo.

The teenager, who was remanded in protective custody at a correction home for juveniles, told the police that he bought the pistol for ₹10,000 with the help of his relative, an investigat­or said.

According to the police, the teenager told them his original plan was to “fire in the air” at Shaheen Bagh and “become famous”.

Police said the minor, who is due to write his class 12 board exams next month, showed no signs of remorse while in their custody for nearly 24 hours.
