- Amarpal Singh

LUDHIANA : A day after two persons, including a woman, were run over by the Delhi-amritsar Shatabdi Express at Giaspura railway level crossing on Saturday about 8.15pm, divisional railway manager (DRM), Ferozepur, has marked an inquiry into the case. Two bikes, two scooters and a cycle had come under the wheels of the speeding train as it approached the Ludhiana railway station.

The victims are Gurpreet Kaur, 26, and Ratanjit, 64.

Government Railway Police (GRP) have booked the two injured, Sunny Kumar, 21, of Kailash Nagar and Arjun Kumar, 25, of Rangilla Nagar, Jamalpur, under Section 304-A (causing death due to negligence) of the IPC and other sections. Both are under treatment, but out of danger. Under the rules, in their illegal attempt at crossing the closed railway track, they also put lives of passengers at risk, as the train could have derailed.

“Although, this is a case of trespass and not a railway acci- dent, but still we are conducting an inquiry. Prima facie, it is a case of negligence on the part of the public. Everybody knew fully well that the crossing was closed, yet they put their lives in danger ignoring the warnings of the RPF personnel on duty,” said Rajesh Aggarwal, the DRM.

The gateman, identified as Honey, who was guarding the crossing proceeded on leave on Sunday, with sources saying that he was in a state of shock.

The other sections in the case against the two injured are 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the IPC.

Security has been deployed at the level-crossing with six RPF personnel and 15 Ludhiana Police officials on the spot.
