MOVE COMES AFTER A COMPLAINT ALLEGING LACK OF TRANSPARENCY AND VIOLATION OF GUIDELINES

JALANDHAR: The Punjab technical education department has asked the Inder Kumar Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKG-PTU) to stop the process of recruiting registrar, it is learnt. This was done following a complaint that there was lack of transparency and guidelines are being violated.

A communication in this regard was sent to university vice-chancellor (VC) by department recently with the approval of Punjab technical education minister Charanjit Singh Channi. In December last year, the state government had asked the varsity to complete within three months the process for filling the posts of registrar and controller of examination. In January,

PTU had sent a draft of the regulations for recruitment of the posts to the state government and they are still to be cleared.

The complaint was filed by Hoshiarpur resident Raj Shreejeet Singh in February with the PTU’S board of governors, saying the criteria approved by the board is being overlooked. “The total distribution of marks exceeds the maximum limit for the section of administrative officers. This is against the established law as decided by the Supreme Court of India,” mentions the complaint, demanding that the process be started afresh in a transparent manner.

In Feb 2019, the varsity sought applications for the posts of registrar and controller of examination (COE). After the final screening on September 24, 2019, 28 candidates were found eligible for the post of registrar. The university conducted the aptitude test, followed by a presentation and personnel interview in the first week of February this year. The post of registrar fell vacant in January 2014 and Sukhbir Singh Walia is the officiating registrar.

PTU VC Ajay Kumar Sharma said it was a good sign that state technical education department is taking complaints vigilantly. “We will apprise the state government about the recruitment process,” he said.
