MOGA : A head constable was killed and two policemen were injured when a resident of Khosa Pando in Moga district opened fire at a police team that reached the village in connection with a complaint of arson against the accused early on Tuesday.

Head constable Jagmohan Singh, 42, died on the spot, while inspector Tirlochan Singh and head constable Ridham Singh were injured. The accused, Gurwinder Singh, too, sustained bullet injuries and was admitted to the civil hospital in Moga.

Senior superintendent of police Harmanbir Singh Gill said that Gurwinder set the wheat straw of his uncle on fire after having a fight with him and a police complaint was lodged on Monday night. “When the duty officer visited the village, Gurwinder misbehaved with him and later climbed his house’s roof and opened fire in the air with his father’s licensed 12-bore rifle,” he said.

When a special team, comprising staff of the crime investigation agency (CIA), Moga, reached the spot, the accused opened fire at it also, killing Jagmohan on the spot. Inspector Tirlochan Singh and head constable Vedham Singh were injured. They were rushed to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana, where their condition is stable, police said.

“The accused fired more than 50 rounds at the police party and around 40 rounds were fired from our side in more than three-hourlong operation. We have to give cover fire to retrieve the body of the cop,” said deputy superintendent of police Barjinder Singh.

A deputy superintendent of police and an SP reached the spot soon after with their teams. The accused opened fire yet again and tried to flee after taking his mother at gunpoint. He had sustained bullet injuries during exchange of fire with the police. He called an ambulance that took him to the civil hospital where he was later arrested. A team of the Special Operations Group (SOG) was called to Moga from Patiala but the accused was arrested before they arrived.

A case was registered under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), etc of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections of Arms Act.
