Two militants, one CRPF man killed in Pulwama gunfight

Two rifles, incriminat­ing material found at site

SRINAGAR: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and two unidentifi­ed militants were killed in an encounter in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmiront­uesday, police said.

IGP (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar said the militants were given an opportunit­y to surrender, however, they fired indiscrimi­nately uponthejoi­nt search party, leading to an encounter. “Two militants werekilled­andtheirbo­dies were retrieved from the site of encounter. Theidentif­icationand affiliatio­n of the slain militants is beingascer­tained,” hesaid. However, peoplelivi­ngintheare­asaid militants killed in theencount­ers were locals who had joined militancy recently.

Police said a CRPF man receivedcr­itical gunshotinj­uries duringtheg­unfightand­latersuccu­mbed.“incriminat­ing materials, including arms (two AK rifles) and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. All the recovered material has been taken into case records for investigat­ion and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes,” apolicespo­kesmansaid.

Police said the bodies of the slain militants have been sent to Handwarafo­rlastrites­after conducting­medico-legal formalitie­s, includingc­ollectiono­ftheirdna. “Incaseafam­ilyclaimst­hekilled terrorists to be their kith or kin, theycancom­eforwardfo­ridentific­ation and participat­e in last rites at Handwara,” the spokesman said.

Pakistan is trying to push militants into J&kunderthec­overof ceasefire violations by its troops along the LOC, police chief Dilbagh Singh said on Tuesday. He said the security grid at the border as well as hinterland were working in tandem to defeat the efforts against peace in the UT.

Police ontuesdayc­laimedthat­a youth from Srinagar, who went missingdur­ingatrekki­ngexpediti­on in Ganderbal, has joined the militant ranks. “He has joined militant ranks. If the parents bringhimba­ckhome, thetrekker won’t be arrested,” IGP (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar said. The IGP, however, refusedtod­ivulgemore details about Dar. However, his familyhasd­enieddarha­vingany links with militants. He was a student of the management­studies at Kashmir University.
