In 1963, Merck scientist Maurice Hilleman cultured the mumps virus from the throat of his ill daughter and used the weakened strain to create a vaccine. The Mumpsvax vaccine was introduced in 1967. It took a little less than 4 years from start to finish – and this is a record that stands to the day
