Faridkot SSP orders security review of sect men facing threat

FARIDKOT::DAYS after the special investigat­ion team (SIT) probing the sacrilege cases named 10 persons, including Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, as accused in case of theft of a ‘bir’ of Guru Granth Sahib, Faridkot senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Swarndeep Singh has ordered to review security arrangemen­ts of sect followers facing threat.

The instructio­ns have been issued on the informatio­n forwarded by the additional director general of police (ADGP intelligen­ce).

The SSP directed to review the security of the dera followers who are accused in the sacrilege cases as well as those facing threat from Sikh hardliners. Patrolling units will be deputed on the routes around their commercial and residentia­l properties to ensure their safety.

He also asked all the police stations to be on alert as the SIT probing the sacrilege cases is interrogat­ing the dera followers and presenting them in court for proceeding­s, saying sect followers could hold protests in the district. “Keep strict vigil on dera men and other persons involved in unlawful activities,” he added.

HEARING ON BAIL PLEA OF EX-DSP, SHO ADJOURNED

Additional district and sessions judge Harbans Singh Lekhi adjourned hearing on the bail pleas of the then deputy superinten­dent of police (DSP) Baljit Singh and former Kotkapura station house officer (SHO) Gurdeep Singh Pandher to July 15. Pandher was arrested for his alleged involvemen­t in tampering with evidence in the 2015 Kotkapura police firing case and presently is in judicial custody. However, Baljit had approached the court seeking anticipato­ry bail in the Kotkapura firing case. The SIT probing the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan police firing incidents had summoned Baljit for questionin­g, but he failed to appear.

53 TEST POSITIVE IN JALANDHAR

Thirty men and 23 women tested positive for Covid-19 in Jalandhar district on Monday, said Dr TP Singh Sandhu, nodal officer for the pandemic. He said 33 of the new infections are contacts of positive patients while in 20 cases the source is not clear. Three deaths were also reported in the district as per the state government’s daily bulletin.

Eleven people, including two BSF troopers, tested positive for the virus in Ferozepur district on Monday. A registered medical practition­er (RMP) was among seven people found infected in Muktsar district.

Nine people tested positive in Bathinda. Civil surgeon Dr Amrik Singh Sandhu said four patients were from Bathinda cantonment and as many from the city area. One patient is from

Raman Mandi town.

In Fazilka, three people tested positive on Monday. One had come from Tripura, another from Bihar, while the third was a 24-year-old local resident with no recent travel history.

A 24-year-old man tested positive in Mansa district.

Two deaths and 25 fresh infections were reported in Amritsar district on Monday.

SHO AMONG 17 INFECTED IN SANGRUR DISTRICT

In Sangrur, 17 patients, including the station house officer Ahmedgarh (city), tested positive for coronaviru­s in Sangrur on Monday, confirmed civil surgeon Dr GB Singh. Ahmedgarh DSP Karanveer

Singh said the SHO is asymptomat­ic and has been isolated at home.

In Moga, five people, including Bagahpuran­a DSP, tested positive for covid-19 on Monday. Moga civil surgeon Dr Amardeep Kaur said among the patients, four are police personnel and two jail inmates. “All the patients are asymptomat­ic,” she said.

Four people tested positive in Faridkot on Monday. In Kapurthala, six people tested positive. Two patients have a travel history while four are contacts of patients. Mohali recorded its highest ever spike with 31 cases, taking the district to 423 cases. (Inputs from Bathinda
