Had left home to report for work at Fortis Hospital on Saturday night; father spotted him being assaulted near the Forest Complex
MOHALI: A 29-year-old male nurse working at Fortis Hospital, Sector 62, was strangled and beaten to death by a group of men near the Forest Complex in Sector 68 on Saturday night.
Police said the victim, Arun Bhardwaj, lived with his family in Phase 9, and originally hailed from Garhdiwala in Hoshiarpur, Punjab.
Police have rounded up five persons for questioning and identified one of the accused as Kamal Grewal. They are working to establish the reason behind the attack.
The victim’s father, Vijay Kumar, told the police that after Arun returned from work around 8.30 pm on Saturday, he got a call from a doctor to return to the hospital urgently.
“Arun took the car and left. Later, Vijay ventured out for a walk and spotted some people thrashing a man near the liquor vend, adjoining the Forest Complex, in Sector 68. On approaching the scuffle, he realised it was his son. Arun was rushed to Fortis Hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” said deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Deep Kamal.
“The body bore injury marks all over, including the neck. The victim as beaten up and strangled to death,” said Rajneesh Chaudhary, station house officer (SHO), Phase 8.
“The exact reason behind the scuffle is not clear. We are scanning CCTV footage and have spoken to some liquor vend workers, who witnessed the crime. We are hopeful of nabbing the attackers by Monday,” DSP Kamal said.
A case under Sections 302 (murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 159 (fighting in a public place) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Phase 8 police station.
The victim leaves behind his parents, wife and a two-monthold daughter. The family had shifted to Mohali around two years back.
The body was handed over to the family after autopsy, whose report is awaited.
