Cases rise, Trump changes stance on reopening schools
WASHINGTON/NEWYORK: Softening his earlier stance, US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that some schools, especially in hot spots, may need to delay reopening this fall as coronavirus cases and deaths continue to surge.
Covid-19 has infected more than four million people in the country so far, claiming at least 634,000 lives.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), meanwhile, laid out school reopening guidelines, arguing that Covid-19 risks for children are relatively low at this stage.
Trump’s latest position marks a shift from his previous demand for a full-fledged reopening of the country’s schools this fall.
He said the districts in hot spots “may need to delay reopening for a few weeks”, adding that governors will take the decision.
