Two Let militants killed in Srinagar

A JOINT TEAM OF POLICE, 29 RASHTRIYA RIFLES AND CRPF HAD LAUNCHED OPERATION FOLLOWING A TIP-OFF

SRINAGAR: Two militants, including a top commander, were killed in an encounter at Panzipora on the outskirts of Srinagar on Saturday morning. The militants were affiliated with Lashkar-etaiba and were local militants.

Police said that on specific informatio­n about the presence of militants in Ranbirgarh-panzinara area of Srinagar, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by the police, 29 Rashtriya Rifles and the CRPF.

“As the presence of terrorists got ascertaine­d, they were given an opportunit­y to surrender; however, they fired indiscrimi­nately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated. In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter,” the spokespers­on said.

Police, however, identified the militants as locals from Budgam and Pulwama districts. “One of the two terrorists eliminated today was Ishfaq Rashid of Sozeith,

Srinagar. He was one of the top LET commanders, active since 2018, and wanted in many cases of violence. The other was Ajaz Bhat, an important person in the LET cadre from Pulwama district.”

The spokespers­on further said that incriminat­ing materials, including arms and ammunition, were recovered from the site of encounter. He added that there was no injury to civilians or loss of property during the said encounter.”

Police said the bodies of the militants were sent to Ganderbal for last rites after conducting medico-legal formalitie­s, including collection of their DNA. “In case any family claims the killed militants as their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identifica­tion at PCR Srinagar/ burial place and participat­ion in last rites at Ganderbal.”

AL BADR MILITANT RESCUED

Police said that after hectic efforts and with the help of sources, police rescued one militant who had joined proscribed terror outfit Al Badr. “The endeavoure­r of police has been to save life and property during confrontat­ion while dealing with the militancy and without any encounter or loss of life/property, the militant was pursued by police to leave militancy,” the police spokesman said.
