Haryana sees 9 deaths, 749 fresh infections

CHANDIGARH: Nine people succumbed to the coronaviru­s disease (Covid-19) on Tuesday in Haryana as the state reported 749 fresh infections, increasing the cumulative number of positive cases to 32,876, said the health bulletin.

Four patients battling the infection died in Faridabad, two in Ambala and one each in Gurugram, Panchkula and Jhajjar. With this, the death toll has risen to 406 (292 men, 114 women).

Faridabad logged the maximum new cases (186) on Tuesday, followed by Gurugram where 101 people tested positive in the past 24 hours.

Other districts where fresh infections were recorded included Rewari (59), Panipat (42), Rohtak (41), Yamunanaga­r, Ambala and Palwal (38 each), Karnal (31), Kurukshetr­a (28), Hisar (27), Sonepat (23), Jind and Fatehabad (17 each), Sirsa (15), Jhajjar (10), Mahenderga­rh (9), Kaithal (8), Nuh (4), and Bhiwani (3). By Tuesday evening, Haryana had sent over 5.70 lakh samples for testing and the figure of tests per million population reached 22,494.

There were 6,712 active cases in the state on Tuesday, while 712 patients recovered.

‘Steady rise in recovery rate’ During a videoconfe­rence with National Institutio­n for Transformi­ng

India (Niti) Aayog member Dr VK Paul on Tuesday, Haryana chief secretary Keshni Anand Arora informed that there has been a steady increase in the recovery rate of infected patients and gradual decline in fatality rate as well.

Additional chief secretary (health and family welfare) Rajeev Arora said in June, the recovery rate was 44.78% which improved to 77.46% by July-end and that it is higher than the national recovery rate of 63.53%.

The state has been progressiv­ely increasing the number of tests, both rapid antigen tests as well as RT-PCR, and during Junejuly, the number of tests conducted in the state have doubled.

He said the positivity rate has gone down to 5.75% and the testing capacity has been increased to 15,000 tests per day.

Prof OP Kalra, vice-chancellor of Pandit BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak, said multidisci­plinary medical advice is being rendered to the patients, including pulmonary medicine, critical care, and anaesthesi­a.

He said the patients are also being treated through high-flow oxygen therapy which is showing good results.

Dr Paul stated that the situation in Haryana has stabilised and systematic and scientific management of the pandemic is required to check the spread, an official spokespers­on said.
