SRINAGAR : Militants on Sunday opened fire at a BJP leader in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

This is the third attack on a BJP leader in Kashmir in the last five days, prompting the party to demand fresh security for its cadres. Kashmir IG Vijay Kumar said BJP’S district president Abdul Hamid Najar, 38, was out for a morning walk when he was shot at by militants near the railway bridge. He received bullet injuries in the stomach and was shifted to SMHS hospital in Srinagar. Officials said Najar had been allotted a secure accommodation but he had left that place.

The BJP and Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party condemned the attack . BJP state spokesman Altaf Thakur said, “The attacks on unarmed people like Najar is an inhuman act. The police must track down the assailants.” After the attack on Najar, four BJP leaders and workers from the Budgam unit of the party resigned from their posts.
