AMRITSAR: The commissionerate police suspended a sub-inspector (SI) and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) on Wednesday in connection with the suicide case of a 30-year-old man in Amritsar.

A Gali Murabe Wali resident had ended his life by hanging self from the ceiling fan at his home on Tuesday night. His family had alleged that the victim and his father were tortured and humiliated by the crime investigation agency (CIA) wing of the Amritsar police without any reason, which led to him taking the extreme step.

The family even protested outside the Division-b police station on Tuesday night.

DCP (detective) Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar said that they have suspended SI Palwinder Singh and ASI Surinder Singh.

The victim’s father said police suspect that his elder son was involved in a firing incident that took place in New Amritsar. He and his younger son had turned up before the CIA police on Tuesday morning. Police allowed them to go home in the evening. Despite their assurance that the elder son will turn up before the police on Wednesday, the CIA police allegedly kept the two in illegal custody for a whole day.

CIA’S Amritsar in-charge Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa said they had just called the victim for questioning about his brother’s whereabouts. He said that no one had inflicted any torture upon the victim.

He added that the victim’s brother is a close aide of a gangster and wanted in a firing case. The deceased’s brother turned up for the cremation ceremony where police arrested him.
