Go wide or go home

Skinny is out, volume is in! For SS21, menswear designers across the board showcased a panoply of ultrawide trousers offering comfort and breathability. Picture Al Pacino in Scarface, Michael Douglas in Wall Street or Christian Bale in American Psycho, and you’ve pretty much nailed the look. While labels such as Zegna and Casablanca showcased pleated versions, brands like Gucci and Hermes cut their pants high, invoking an unmistakable period vibe. On the other hand, MSGM, Dolce & Gabbana and Rick Owens presented an athletic look laced with tracksuit-style pants. While they look incredible on the runway and in the lookbooks, it could be a rather tricky silhouette to pull off for a few.

Stylist Divyak D’souza says, “It’s all about striking the right balance. Pick a style which suits your body type — if you have a long and lean body type, then front pleats work well. If you’re short and have a broad body type, then opt for something like the tapered look shown at Hermes. Slouchy and anti-fit is a great home workwear trend.”

Isha Bhansali says, “I’d suggest going tone on tone. For instance, pair a beige T-shirt with matching trousers. I’d also recommend choosing a noncreasy fabric and finishing off the look with a pair of chunky sneakers .”

Stylist Akshay Tyagi hails it as easy-breezy dressing and an homage to vintage tailoring. “Summer dressing is all about practicality, and these looks totally capture that spirit. Finish off the look with opentoe footwear. All in all, find your own structure in it and don’t just ape it blindly,” Tyagi cautions.
