CHANDIGARH: The nine members of the Panjab University (PU) syndicate met vice-chancellor Raj Kumar on Thursday to discuss the issue of conducting the senate elections that are scheduled to begin from August 24.

The meeting comes in wake of rumours that senate elections might get postponed due to the pandemic. The conduct of the elections has remained an ongoing issue between the Goyal alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) group, both of whom had written to PU chancellor Venkaiah Naidu, albeit with opposing stances.

While the Goyal’s stand firm on conducting the elections as per schedule because the nominations have already been finalised in various constituencies, the BJP camp in their letter to the chancellor have sought postponement. Syndicate members Ashok Goyal, Navdeep Goyal, Keshav Malhotra, Emanual Nahar, Rabindra Nath Sharma and others suggested to the V-C that the elections should not be postponed.

One of the members said, “There were rumors that senate elections will be postponed, so we met the vice-chancellor suggesting to him that elections should not be postponed at this stage.”
