SRINAGAR: Two Indian Reserve Police (IRP) personnel were gunned down and another injured when unidentified militants attacked a police party at Nowgam bypass on the outskirts of Srinagar on Friday morning.

Police said militants fired on a police party deployed at Nowgam in the morning and injured three policemen. The cops were taken to the hospital where two of them succumbed to their wounds. The militants escaped.

The victims are Ishfaq Ahmad and Fayaz Ahmad. The cops were from the 20th battalion of Indian Reserve Police Force.

The attack comes a day before Independence Day celebrations in Srinagar when security was already on high alert. A police spokesperson said the injured policeman is stable.

Inspector general of police Vijay Kumar blamed the Jaish-emohammad (JEM) for the attack.

‘’We are trying to identify the militants responsible for the attack. We had received inputs that an attack could take place in the city. The policemen were wearing bullet proof headgear. Unfortunately, the militants came from a narrow lane and attacked the policemen.’’

After the attack, a search operation was launched in the area and house-to-house searches were initiated to trace the militants. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP), Bharatiya Janata Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also condemned that attack on the policemen in Nowgam.

A JKAP spokesperson said, “Violence is not a solution but a gigantic impediment that spreads hatred. In any of its manifestations, violent extremism is unacceptable in a civilized society, regardless of political, ideological or religious motivations.”
