Biggest 1-day surge: 230 tally pushes tricity into grim zone

Daily count goes past 100 for 1st time in Chandigarh, Mohali; P’kula records 4 fatalities

CHANDIGARH/MOHALI/PANCHKULA: The daily Covid count crossed the 100 mark for the first time in Chandigarh and its neighbouri­ng Mohali district, as the tricity that also comprises of Panchkula registered its steepest single-day spike of 230 cases on Monday.

It was on August 10 that the tricity has recorded its previous biggest surge with 218 cases.

Meanwhile, with record four deaths in Panchkula besides one in Chandigarh, the tricity’s Covid toll climbed to 74.

The tricity has recorded 5,351 cases so far, of which 2,325 (43%) remain active. Meanwhile, the number of those recovered has crossed 3,000, with 3,021 discharged so far. The recovery rate and case fatality rate stand at 56% and 1.4%, respective­ly.

ACTIVE CASES CROSS 1,000 MARK IN UT

The number of active Covid-19 cases in Chandigarh crossed the 1,000 mark, as it witnessed record 114 cases on Monday. The death of an 82-year-old man from Burail was also reported, taking the Union Territory’s toll to 30.

The number of infections has reached 2,216, of which 1,183 patients have been cured. On Monday alone, 46 patients were discharged.

The elderly man who died at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, had “suffered respirator­y failure because of complex lung injury due to COVID-19 infection”, according to the health department bulletin.

District Administra­tive Complex in Sector 76, has been sealed for three days and is being sanitised thoroughly. Even earlier, on July 24, an RTA employee had tested positive, which had led to a threeday closure.

Dr Manjit Singh, civil surgeon, Mohali, said the RTA and other infected government employees have been home quarantine­d as they are asymptomat­ic. “We will be taking samples of their family members,” he said.

Among the fresh cases, 43 are from Mohali subdivisio­n, 30 from Kharar and 29 from Dera Bassi. The total number of infections has reached 1,911, of which 989 remain active. As many as 977 people have recovered so far, of whom 28 were discharged on Monday. The district has recorded 36 deaths related to Covid-19 so far.

PA TO HARYANA DGP INFECTED IN P’KULA

In the biggest spike yet, four deaths related to Covid-19 were reported in Panchkula district on Monday, doubling the toll to eight.

Meanwhile, with 14 people, including personal assistant to Haryana director general of police, testing positive on Monday, the total climbed to 1,224.

Among those dead, there are two men who were suffering from diabetes: a 61-year-old man from Sector 21 and a 59-year-old man from Sector 9. A 57-year-old woman from Kona village, who had kidney injury with pneumonia, and a 62-year-old woman from Barelli village also succumbed to the disease.
