State death toll nears 1,000 as 34 more succumb to virus

LUDHIANA/AMRITSAR/SANGRUR/ JALANDHAR/PATIALA/BATHINDA: Punjab on Friday reported 34 more Covid-related fatalities, taking the state’s death toll to 991. The state also witnessed 1,513 fresh cases pushing the tally to 39,327.

According to the media bulletin released by the state government, eight deaths were reported from Ludhiana, five each from Patiala and Jalandhar, four from Kapurthala, three from Amritsar, two from Moga and one each from Barnala, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Mohali, Mansa and Gurdaspur.

Ludhiana again topped the list with 242 fresh Covid-19 cases, followed by Patiala 201, Jalandhar 169, Mohali 143, Sangrur 102, Bathinda 90, Amritsar 80, Kapurthala 70 and Ferozepur 69, according to the bulletin.

The total number of recoveries rose to 23,893 in Punjab on Friday after 856 more Covid-19 patients were discharged after recovery, according to the bulletin. There are 14,443 active cases of coronaviru­s in the state. In Kapurthala, the senior superinten­dent of police and chairman planning board tested.

RECOVERED PCS OFFICERS TO DONATE PLASMA, SAYS ASSN

Punjab Civil Services (PCS) Officers Associatio­n has passed a resolution that those among them who have defeated covid-19 would donate their plasma to boost the recovery of critical patients under Mission Fateh. In a letter to state chief secretary Vini Mahajan the associatio­n has also submitted the list of officers, who have recovered from the infection and willing to donate the plasma.

Mohali SDM Jagdeep Sehgal, who recovered on Thursday donated plasma to DSP Kharar Pal Singh, who is fighting with the pandemic. PRISONER FLEES COVID-19 WARD

A Nakodar resident, Sukhbir Singh, lodged at Kapurthala jail fled from the covid-19 isolation ward of the local civil hospital on Wednesday. He had been admitted there on Monday and had tested positive. Police said Sukhbir was booked under Sections 224 of the IPC.
