CHANDIGARH:THE Bharatiya Janata Party’s Punjab unit on Friday tried to gherao Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s Chandigarh residence, demanding a CBI probe into the recent hooch tragedy that claimed at least 128 lives.

Leading the party workers in a march toward the CM’S residence in Sector 2, state BJP chief Ashwani Sharma held Amarinder personally responsible for the episode as he is in charge of the excise and home departments that let the liquor mafia mushroom in the state.

Sharma alleged that it was under the patronage of the Congress government that a nexus continued between the police and the ruling party leaders to loot the state of hundreds of crores and murder innocent people by selling spurious liquor.

He rued that drugs and liquor were rampant in the state and monetary gain was the only mantra of Amarinder who had promised to make Punjab drugfree.

“This is the worst-ever hooch tragedy in the state. Heads must roll as mere ordering probe by divisional commissioner is an eyewash. The CM should own the responsibility for this tragedy,” said the BJP leader who along with other party workers was detained.
