Kapurthala-born restaurate­ur making waves in Norway

CHANDIGARH :A Punjab-born restaurate­ur has been making waves in Norway for the previous 40 years, serving Indian convention­al dishes with genuine elements and winning hearts.

“Forty years ago, Gurdial Singh from Kapurthala opened the first Indian restaurant in Norway. He taught me and other Norwegians to love Indian food,” former UN environmen­t executive director Erik Solheim mentioned in a tweet on Saturday.

“Now his family runs some of the world’s best Indian restaurant­s. Enjoy tastes of incredible food,” he added.

The former Norwegian diplomat, politician and setting minister, who says he’s impressed by the life and ideas of Mahatma Gandhi within the world battle towards local weather change, performed a vital function in 2018 because the UN Environmen­t chief in convincing India to part out single-use plastics by 2022, a significan­t achievemen­t in his campaign towards plastic air pollution.

Restaurate­ur Gurdial Singh got here to Oslo in 1982, and started popularisi­ng Indian delicacies by founding the Maharaja Restaurant.

His son, Baljit Singh Padda, created ‘Listen to Baljit’ that donates meals to youngsters in many nations.
