Soldier killed in LOC firing

JAMMU: A soldier was killed when Pakistan violated the ceasefire and resorted to firing on forward positions along the Line of Control (LOC) in Mankote sector of Poonch on Thursday.

The soldier, Havildar Nirmal Singh, of Ambala, Haryana, was hit on the right side of the chest around 11.30am. Singh, who belonged to 10 JAK Rifles unit of the army was critically injured and succumbed to his injuries before he could be evacuated, a defence spokespers­on said.

A postmortem was conducted at the sub-district hospital in Mendhar and the body was handed over to the unit , they said, adding that police formalitie­s were being completed. The Indian Army responded to the enemy fire in a befitting manner, he added.singh was a brave, highly-motivated and sincere soldier, the defence spokespers­on said, adding that the nation will always remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty.

Meanwhile, L-G Manoj Sinha condoled the soldier’s demise.

215 terrorists eliminated by CRPF in 2020: DG

As many as 215 terrorists were eliminated by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir in 2020, including Riyaz Naikoo of terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, who carried a reward of ₹12 lakh.

“The force also neutralise­d three terrorists in an exemplary operation in Nagrota, resulting in the recovery of a huge cache of arms and ammunition including 11 AK-47 rifles, three pistols and 29 grenades,” CRPF director general AP Maheshwari said.

The DG also lauded the bravery of Rahul Mathur, deputy commandant of our Valley QAT, who led a courageous operation and killed a terrorist even after sustaining injuries.

Doda, Ramban districts now ‘terrorism-free’

Two out of three districts in Chenab Valley in J&kare now free from terrorism, said police on Thursday. “Doda and Ramban are now militancy-free while an area in Kishtwar district still has a militancy presence. We are trying our best to make the area militancy-free as soon as possible,” said Abdul Jabbar, DIG of Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban range on Thursday.
