Two militants killed in Anantnag encounter
Two AK-47 rifles recovered from slain militants, say officials; police and army had carried out a joint op
SRINAGAR: Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday.
Officials said the encounter erupted at Shalgul forest area of Srigufwara in Anantnag after a joint operation was launched by the Police and Army.
Army’s Chinar Corps said the operation was launched early in the morning, based on information from J&K Police.
A police spokesperson said that during the operation, the militants were given an opportunity to surrender, however, they fired indiscriminately at the search party. “In the ensuing encounter, two unidentified militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of the encounter. The identification and affiliation of those killed in the encounter is being ascertained,” said the spokesperson.
In case any family claims the slain militants to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identification at PCR Kashmir, the official added.
“Arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles and other incriminating materials, were recovered from the site of the encounter,” the spokesperson said.
Police also urged people to cooperate with them till the area is completely sanitised and cleared off of explosive materials, if any.
Earlier in the day when the operation was going on, Kashmir Police had tweeted about killing of “four unidentified terrorists”. But the tweet was subsequently deleted. It later tweeted: “Anantnag Encounter Update: 02 unidentified terrorists killed. Operation going on. Further details shall follow”.
