CHANDIGARH : Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAS on Monday staged a protest in Chandigarh over the delay in action in Behbal Kalan desecration and Kotkapura firing cases.

The AAP MLAS led by leader of opposition Harpal Singh Cheema and deputy leader Sarabjit Kaur Manuke marched towards chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s residence for its gherao but were stopped by the city police. Cheema and other senior leaders were later detained by the police, according to a party release.

The protesting leaders also included MLAS Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Amarjit Singh Sandoa, Jai Kishan Singh Rodi, Kulwant Singh Pandori, Manjit Singh Bilaspur and Jagtar Singh Jagga Hissowal. Cheema said Amarinder should take immediate action by making arrests instead of saving the culprits of the sacrilege and firing cases.

Slamming the CM and the Badals, Cheema alleged said that both were working in collusion and had made multiple attempts to derail the investigation. Manuke and Sandhwan said the state government had failed in putting up the case in a proper manner.

Members of Sikh groups detained, let off

A group of Sikh organisations also held a protest in the state capital demanding justice for the families of those killed in the 2015 police firing incidents in the aftermath of sacrilege incidents.

Members of the Dal Khalsa,

SAD (Amritsar) and United Akali Dal along with aggrieved family members marched from Mullanpur towards Chandigarh, where they were stopped by the police at Sarangpur border. Some protesters were detained. They were to march up to the high court.
