AMBALA/KARNAL: On the protest call by Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, farmers of several Haryana districts burnt copies of the Centre’s three farm laws near the residences of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Saturday.

In Karnal, the farmers gathered at the venue where chief minister (CM) Manohar Lal Khattar had taken part in a tree plantation drive on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Khattar, who was scheduled to arrive at 10am, reached an hour-and-a-half early. Though sources said he wanted to avoid confrontation with the farmers, Karnal deputy commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav insisted the CM’S visit was advanced due to the rain forecast. Farmers reached the venue after Khattar left and raised slogans against the BJP-JJP combine and deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala, besides burning the copies of the farm laws.

In Ambala, the union leaders protested outside the residences of state home minister and Ambala Cantt MLA Anil Vij and city legislator Aseem Goyal. In Yamunanagar, protestors gathered outside the residences of education minister Kanwar Pal and city MLA Ghanshyamdas Arora. Similar protests were held in Kurukshetra, Kaithal and Panipat districts. There was no report of violence.

Meanwhile, farmers affiliated with the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) have decided to move towards the Singhu border near Delhi from Ambala’s Shambhu border on Sunday. The union said farmers will be moving on around 2,000 four-wheelers, instead of tractor-trailers.
