Shun political stereotyping

-

Political parties and even the media are referring to Charanjit Singh Channi as the first Dalit Sikh chief minister of Punjab. Such stereotypes are unfair and violate the spirit of the Constitution. Why are we using the prefix ‘Dalit’ to address him? It indicates people still believe in discrimination on the basis of caste, religion and race. This is a backward mindset that must be shunned.

Amritsar of the Congress high command has taken its toll on one of the finest chief ministers of Punjab. It did not depute a good team to handle the crisis in the state. It deputed leaders, who had themselves been defeated in polls in their home states, and thus did not have the credentials to understand a complex battle of egos and one-upmanship. As a dejected citizen, one can only extend best wishes to the new chief minister.

Khanna by Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. Sidhu’s stamp was visible in Channi’s body language and his responses. It was tactful of his team to end the conference early, but not before he had announced a power bill relief for the peasantry and also requesting agitating employees to join their duty, with an assurance of considering their demands at the earliest. There was no comment on farm agitation. Overall, the press conference told us nothing new, but only brought out the diplomatic side of the new CM.
