Heatwave to prevail in Punjab, Haryana for next 3 days

NEW DELHI: Heat wave conditions are likely to impact some parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, south Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Jharkhand till April 20, India Meteorolog­ical Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

The maximum temperatur­es were above normal by 3-5 degree C in many parts over Jammu division, Punjab, West Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand; in some parts over East Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal and in isolated pockets over Haryanadel­hi, Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan and Saurashtra­kutch.

Now, maximum temperatur­es are likely to rise by 2-3 degree C over northwest India during next 3 days and fall by 2-3 degree C thereafter. Heat waves are also likely over Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha till April 20.

There is a 90% rainfall deficiency over northwest India during the pre-monsoon season so far which started on March 1.

East Uttar Pradesh has received “no rain” during the period while West Uttar Pradesh; Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi subdivisio­ns have recorded 99% rain deficiency. Himachal Pradesh recorded 94% rain deficiency; Jammu and Kashmir 90%; West Rajasthan 81% and east Rajasthan recorded 44% rain deficiency.

The rainfall deficiency over the country is 35% with 27% excess over south peninsula; 14% excess over east and northeast

India; 81% deficiency over central India and 90% deficiency over northwest India. As far as states are concerned, Delhi has a 99% rain deficiency.

Shimla Met department director Surender Paul said a fresh Western Disturbanc­e is likely to get activated over the region, which may cause rains in most part of the state from April 19 to April 21. A yellow alert has been issued for thundersto­rm and lightening in plains, mid and high hills in isolated pockets, said Paul.

However, a heat wave may sweep across the state on Monday and there has been a yellow alert for high temperatur­es in the state.

He said over the past 24 hours, light rains have occurred in some areas in the state. Banjar got 9mm of rainfall; Jogindarna­gar and Bijahi 7mm each; Rampur and Palampur 5mm each; Dalhousie and Sarahan 4mm each and Narkanda and Khadrala 3mm each.

Paul said there was no large change in minimum and maximum temperatur­es during last 24 hours. Average minimum temperatur­es were normal and average maximum temperatur­es were above normal.

Keylong, the administra­tive centre of Lahaul-spiti district, was coldest with the night temperatur­e recorded 2.1°C, Kalpa saw a minimum of 4°C, Shimla 13.7°C, Dharamshal­a 16.4°C, Palampur 14°C, Manali 7°C, Kufri 8.8°C and Dalhousie 9.4°C. Una was the warmest with day temperatur­e recorded at 41.2°C.
