With the resignation of Uddhav Thackeray from the chief minister’s post in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena’s two-and-a-half-year long tryst with power came to an end. While it was being widely expected that the Eknath Shinde faction will support the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Devendra Fadnavis as the next CM candidate, Fadnavis himself announced on Thursday that Shinde would be the next chief minister of the state. Then, hours later, BJP’S national president JP Nadda said Fadnavis would be the deputy CM.

What does this mean for the future of the Shiv

Sena? Is Shinde’s rebellion to be seen as the perfect palace coup which has given the rebel Sena camp the bargaining power to get the BJP to concede the CM’S post to the Sena? Or is it just a cosmetic concession where the BJP has allowed the Shinde camp a face saver and it is the latter which will control real power in the state? What is going to be the fate of Uddhav Thackeray’s faction of the Sena?

It is useful to look at the history and evolution of the Shiv Sena to answer this question. Here are four charts which explain this in detail.

The army and navy will begin registration of candidates under the new Agnipath model for shortterm induction of soldiers on Friday, people familiar with the development said on Thursday. Those recruited under the scheme will be called Agniveers. The IAF began registrations under the scheme on June 24 for 3,000 jobs, and as of June 29, at least 201,000 candidates have applied, with registrations open till July 5, officials said. “Going by the number of candidates who have registered for IAF, we expect a good response from candidates eligible for the army and navy,” one official said. The armed forces will recruit 46,000 Agniveers this year – 40,000 in the army and 3,000 each in the IAF and navy.

A 20-year-old woman pushing a baby stroller on a New York City street was shot in the head and killed on Wednesday, the New York Police Department said. The victim was taken to Metropolitan Hospital Center, where she died of her wounds, while her child was unharmed, police said. At a press conference near the scene in the Upper East side of Manhattan, New York’s mayor, Eric Adams, appealed for help in finding the shooter. “We are going to find the person who is guilty of this horrific crime. We are going to find him and bring him to justice,” Adams said. The woman was shot once in the head by a gunman, dressed all in black, who approached her from behind. No suspects had been taken into custody as of Wednesday night. the ability of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to impose wider regulations to limit carbon emissions from power plants and shift the industry from coal towards other energy sources, a ruling in line with ideology of the Conservative majority of the bench. In the West Virginia v EPA case, a 6-3 ruling saw all the six conservative judges voting to limit the federal agency’s powers. The move confirms a wider reset underway in US jurisprudence, nearly a week after the court, first, narrowed the ability of states to impose restrictions on carrying guns, and then, overturned Roe v Wade which enshrined access to abortion as a constitutional right.
