NEW DELHI: The parents of Rio bronze medallist wrestler Sakshi Malik, 23, were felicitated in the Delhi assembly on Tuesday.

AAP MLA from Chandni Chowk, Alka Lamba, moved a motion of thanks and congratulated Malik’s father Sukhbir, mother Sudesh and coach Shyam Budaki for inspiring every Indian.

“She (Malik’s mother) was sharing her experience of how she got the (job) offer letter the day Sakshi was born. In a country, where girl child is killed in womb, such examples are inspirational,” said Lamba.

Other MLAs praised the dedication of Sakshi’s parents.

Malik and silver medallist shuttler PV Sindhu are expected to visit the Delhi assembly soon, where the Delhi government will give the reward money announced to them. Sisodia had visited the wrestler’s parents in Haryana’s Rohtak and announced an award of `1 crore for Sakshi Malik.

Sakshi bagged the medal in the 58kg category, pulling off a dramatic 8-5 victory in the play-off bout, becoming India’s first female wrestler to win an Olympic medal. NEW DELHI: Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia has promised to launch an investigation into the issue of DDA taking over land of Waqf board.

According to AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has acquired 382 of 1977 properties of Waqf board and plan to construct parks at kabristan (graveyard).

“As per the Gazette notification, properties of Waqf board can’t be transferred so the probe should be ordered to know how lands were acquired by the DDA. L-G is supporting DDA in the matter,” said Khan.

Other MLAs supported Khan in the matter and said that if DDA is unable to return the property, it must pay the rent for it.

“Earlier people use to donate land so that it can be used for the betterment of the community. These lands are now acquired illegally by DDA,” said Naresh Yadav, party MLA.
