AAP blames civic bodies for spread of dengue, chikungunya
NEW DELHI: Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain on Tuesday said he will try to get a list of sanitation workers from the municipal corporations and distribute it among MLAs so that they can track cleanliness in their constituencies.
Jain was speaking at the four-day Delhi assembly session where MLAs raised the issue of rising instances of dengue and chikungunya and blamed it on the lack of cleanliness.
The MLAs said the municipal corporations want diseases to spread in Delhi so that people blame the government for it.
“There is a political conspiracy behind leaving mounds of garbage on the streets and making them breeding grounds for mosquitoes. It is the municipal corporations’ responsibility to control the spread of mosquitoes but the BJP-ruled corporations want the public to blame the government,” said Laxmi Nagar MLA, Nitin Tyagi.
Jain said any such conspiracy will not be tolerated. “Looking at the way the BJP has worked in the municipal corporations, it is possible they will not win even three seats in next year’s municipal elections,” he said.
The AAP MLAs said councillors were paying contractual sanitation workers only for the days that they worked and were pocketing the rest.
“Contractual employees come only twice in a month and are paid for those two days. The councillors show that the employee worked the entire month and pocket the remaining amount. We should at least, be given the list of sanitation workers so that we can check who is responsible for each area and if they are reporting for work,” said Shalimar Bagh MLA, Bandana Kumari.
The MLAs said commissioners of the three municipal corporations be called to the assembly to hold a discussion on cleanliness.
