Do not let negative thoughts affect your selfesteem

My students have enriched me and helped me grow as an individual. The story of one of my students, who was suffering from self-pity, is worth recounting. Self-pity is one of the most negative emotions we can come across a person.

Once as I was winding up a session with my students, a girl walked into the class. She was frail and her face was devoid of emotions. It was evident that she was under great stress.

I asked her questions but she was silent. When I checked her bio-data I was shocked: She was a computer science engineer and had passed out with high marks from a prestigious college. I asked her why was she miserable and lost, and she started crying and left.

The next morning I decided to meet her and she told me her story.

She belonged to an influential family and while pursuing her engineering degree, she fell in love with one of her batchmates and married him against the wishes of her family who broke off ties with her.

Things took an ugly turn when her husband did not permit her to work. Within two years, he turned abusive. One fine day, he kicked her out of the house .

Overwhelmed with grief, she approached a friend for her. The salary was meagre but she felt it was better than what she was suffering .

It was at this time that I saw her and helped her in her efforts to bounce back. She is now a model of resilience and self-belief and extremely successful in her career.

And that is the power in believing in oneself. At all times we should have faith in our abilities and not be bogged down by negative thoughts.
