NEWDELHI: The Delhi government has decided to extend the 20,000 litres free water scheme to the residents of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area with retrospective effect.

This was one of the main poll planks of the Aam Aadmi Party and was implemented in April 2015.

The party had decided to give up to 20,000 litres of free water per month to every household after coming to power.

“The NDMC area was left out initially. The scheme would be implemented retrospectively. The water bills paid by people living there will be refunded and Delhi government will pay the subsidy amount to NDMC,” Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said after a cabinet meeting held at his residence on Saturday morning.

The cabinet also approved a proposal to increase the capacity of an under-construction hospital in Ambedkar Nagar from 200 beds to 600 beds. “Earlier, we were making a 200-bed hospital at the cost of ₹125 crore. But now we will have 600 beds at a total cost of ₹181 crore,” Kejriwal said.

The AAP government also announced its decision to make permanent ‘ghats’ on the river Yamuna bank by 2017.
