NEWDELHI:A major fire broke out at the children’s ward in GTB Hospital in north east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden early on Saturday morning.

The blaze, which caused panic among patients and hospital staff, was brought under control by fire tenders before it could cause any damage to life or property.

Fire department officials said more than 30 children were safely evacuated by them.

“The incident occurred around 4am in Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot. All children were rescued safely. The fire was doused within 20 minutes. No casualties were reported,” said a fire official.

Officials said that the fire broke out on the second floor of the hospital building. The blaze was first spotted by one of the hospital staff, who quickly alerted others and informed the fire department.

“The children, who were admitted on this floor, were shifted to a separate ward. The fire could have begun due to a short circuit in a ventilation machines,” said a fire official.

Few hours earlier, another major fire had broken out in a local market at Chattarpur, gutting a beauty parlour, two shops and an electronic godown. A passerby had alerted the fire department about the blaze.

The Chattarpur incident occurred at 9pm on Friday, said a fire official, adding that no one was injured. Police said that they are yet to ascertain the cause of that fire.

Eyewitnesses said that the fire broke out after the shops had shut and the owners were on their way home.

Fire officials said that the presence of clothes and electronic items aided the spread of the fire.
