NEWDELHI: A 28-year-old man was arrested on Friday for robbing a jeweller at gunpoint in Chandni Chowk.

The accused, identified as one Sufiyana, was previously involved in a case of firing at a constable. A case had been registered against him then at Seelampur police station.

Police said Sufiyana was arrested when he, along with two aides, arrived in a motorcycle near Town Hall on Friday.

“Sufiyana went towards a jeweller who was standing nearby and carrying seven kilos of silver. His accomplices stood at a distance. The accused fired three shots at the jeweller, snatched the silver from him and tried to run away. But a constables present at the spot nabbed him,” said a senior police officer.

The gunshot was also heard by local residents who also quickly alerted three beat constables present nearby. Sufiyana’s accomplices, in the meanwhile, fled on the bike leaving Sufiyana behind.

“Sufiyana tried to hop on to the speeding bike while his accomplices were fleeing, but failed. His aides panicked after locals raised an alarm on hearing the gunshot,” said the officer. Sufiyana’s accomplices are still absconding.
