NEWDELHI: Sunday is a holiday for students, but for many enrolled with the Delhi government schools it has become a day to read and learn more.

Over 50 Reading Melas were held on Sunday in various government schools, community centres and public places where the local community engaged in conducting activities for students to help them read.

The move is part of government’s plan to ensure all students achieve basic reading abilities before November 14 — celebrated as Children’s Day.

The government in late June launched the Chunauti 2018 scheme that divides children into groups on the basis of who can read and write Hindi, English and solve mathematical problems.

Parents and members of the school management committee (SMC) conducted reading practice with special study material prepared for students who cannot read.

“I am illiterate but I want my daughter to study. The teachers told me she needs to improve so I bring her to the Reading Mela,” said Mohammad Jamal, who was at the event organised at a government school in JJ Colony Wazirpur.

Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who is also the Education Minister of Delhi, attended a Reading Mela organised in Chander Vihar in east Delhi, to encourage children and parents who had gathered at the venue.
