NEWDELHI: A gang that committed a series of burglaries in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) staff quarters since June was busted on Sunday.

Three members of the gang were arrested and stolen electronic gadgets, gold and silver jewellery worth lakhs of rupees besides a toy pistol and house breaking equipment like electric cutter, latch and rods were recovered from them.

With the arrest of Gaurav, 26, Mohit Kumar,18 and Karan Yadav, 26, the Vasant Kunj North police claimed to have solved 30 cases of burglaries committed by them in various parts of the city. This includes seven daylight burglaries in the residential quarters in JNU housing complex that are allotted to senior professors of the varsity. Four of the seven were committed in September.

Ishwar Singh, deputy commissioner of police (south), said the three were arrested following investigation in cases of burglaries reported at the police station by senior JNU staff.

The spate in burglaries in JNU staff quarters became a matter of concern for the police and residents because the crimes were happening despite the round-theclock presence over 300 private security guards. The absence of CCTV cameras and police patrolling not allowed inside the university added to the problems.

“A team under the leadership of SHO Gagan Bhaskar was formed to identify the suspects and bring them to book at the earliest. Policemen in plainclothes were deployed around the varsity to keep a watch on people visiting the campus,” said Nupur Prasad, additional DCP (south).

“The three confessed to committing burglaries in JNU campus and other places in Delhi,” added Prasad.

Six laptops, an iPod, eight mobile phones, three watches, an LCD TV, a home theatre, one digital camera, a Kindle , gold and silver jewellery were recovered.
