FORMER CJI ALTAMAS KABIR PASSES AWAY

KOLKATA: Former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir died in Kolkata on Sunday. He was 68 and suffering from kidney ailments.

Reacting to his death, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Condolence­s on the passing of former CJ Altamas Kabir ji. My thoughts with his family/colleagues. India & Bengal have lost a legal luminary.” Kabir, who hailed from Kolkata, served as the CJI for a brief period of nine months between September 2012 and July 2013. He was a Supreme Court judge since September 2005.

“He died at 2.52pm,” said a spokespers­on of the private hospital where Kabir was receiving treatment for renal failure.

As an advocate, Kabir practiced in Calcutta HC and district session court between early 1970s and late 1980. In 2012, he became the 39th CJI.He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. HTC
