JNU moves HC to remove protesters from building
NEWDELHI:The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration on Tuesday moved the Delhi High Court, seeking help to permanently remove the blockade of its administrative building by students who are protesting against a University Grants Commission (UGC) notification.
The varsity claimed official and academic works has been affected due to the blockade of the administrative building by students.
It claimed helplessness in distributing certificates, degrees and other official documents as the blockade had restricted access of the vice-chancellor and other officials.
Claiming that it has been unable to pay its staff this month, the JNU administration sought direction to police to remove the blockade and to set up a perimeter around the administrative block, making it out of bounds for demonstrations and dharnas.
It had earlier told the high court that a first information report (FIR) had been lodged against students who had been blocking access to the varsity’s administrative block.
The students have been protesting against a UGC notification that is set to result in seat cuts, leading to no admissions in the MPhil, Phd programmes at several centres of the varsity. The UGC notification puts a cap on the number of students a professor can provide guidance.
Earlier, the high court had asked the varsity why it had not yet approached the court if access to the administrative block of the varsity was being blocked by students since February9.
The query was put to JNU’s lawyer by Justice VK Rao while hearing a plea by five students of the varsity that they be provided their marksheets and certificates as they want to apply for various courses and jobs.
