An Arunachal Pradesh Congress leader was shot dead by the son of the state assembly’s deputy speaker Tumke Bagra at Aalo in West Siang district, the police said on Monday.

Kenjum Kamsi, a secretaryrank leader of Arunachal PCC was shot dead by Kajum Bagra, the son of the deputy speaker, in front of a hotel at Aalo on Sunday at around 10 PM, said West Siang Superintendent of Police Mari Riba.

The incident was reportedly a fallout of a scuffle between the two, he said adding the matter is being probed further.

The accused was arrested and the weapon seized by Aalo police and a case registered, Riba said.

The APCC has condemned the incident and said Kajum using his father’s official vehicle and committing such “heinous crime” proved the saying ‘like father like son’.

“The tragic incident also reflects the true colour of the BJP to which the deputy speaker belongs. It raises a serious question,” the party said.

Condoling the death, it also demanded exemplary punishment for the accused and resignation of the deputy speaker.

The Election Commission (EC) has come around to the Congress party’s demand for more time to conducts its organisational polls. It has however; added a rider that the party will have to submit the list of new office bearers by the first week of January 2018.

EC sources declined to comment on why it has agreed to accept the Congress' request for extending the deadline, but said it has been conveyed to the party that there will not be any changes to the election schedule.

It had earlier turned down the Congress party’s request.

The Congress had in turn questioned the poll body's jurisdiction in fixing a date for its organisational election. It said setting a deadline for internal polls by the Commission goes against the resolution of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), its highest decision-making body.

The party had assured that it will conduct internal polls by the end of the year, after it has updated all its lists.
