Three days after the chopped body parts of a man, stuffed in four plastic sacks and dumped at four different places in north Delhi at a distance of over four kilometres, the Delhi Police on Monday claimed to have solved the blind murder case by arresting a man.

The police identified the deceased, Nitin, and the prime accused, Happy Kapoor, with the help of a CCTV camera installed near a medical store in north Delhi’s Sant Nagar near Burari where the two were last seen leaving on a motorcycle. Nitin’s face was so brutally disfigured that even his mother failed to identify him, said police.

The other suspect, Pawan Bhatia, was also identified with the help of another CCTV camera footage. While Pawan was arrested on Monday morning, Happy remained at large till late evening, said police.

Jatin Narwal, deputy commissioner of police (north), said that Happy and Pawan brutally killed Nitin because they held him responsible for the deaths of their brothers, who had drowned in river Yaumna at Shyam Ghat in Burari in 2015.

“Happy’s brother, Vicky, and Pawan’s brother, Suraj, had died due to drowning. The duo and their family members had accused Nitin of pushing Vicky and Suraj into the river after making them consume alcohol,” said Narwal.

“Happy and Pawan had developed animosity against Nitin from the day of their brothers’ death. They were constantly looking for an opportunity to take revenge,” Narwal added. According to the DCP, the youngsters were all friends but after the incident, Happy and Pawan were not in talking terms for several months.

Pawan told the police that they had recently started talking to Nitin and it was a part of their alleged conspiracy to kill Nitin, said the police. On the evening of March 30, Nitin was present outside a medical store near his house with his two friends. After his friends left, Happy arrived on a motorcycle and offered Nitin to accompany him to Pawan’s home for a liquor party, said the DCP.

The two reached Pawan’s home and Happy opened the flat using a spare key Pawan had given to him. Pawan was not present there. The two consumed alcohol. Happy allegedly spiked Nitin’s drink with sleeping pills. “When he became dizzy, Happy slit his throat using a chopping knife. He waited in the room, saw Nitin bleeding and dying. Once confirmed that Nitin was dead, Happy put his body in the bed box and returned home,” said an investigator.

After reaching home, Happy called Pawan and informed him that he had killed Nitin. “Pawan disclosed that he too felt thrilled after hearing about Nitin’s death. He insisted Happy to meet and celebrate. They met the same night, consumed alcohol and returned to the room where Nitin’s body was hidden in the bed box,” the officer said.

The two allegedly took out Nitin’s body from the box and chopped off his head and limbs using the chopping knife. They allegedly stuffed the body parts in four separate plastic bags and then cleaned the entire room throughout the night.

“Around 3am, they started dumping the bags,” another investigator said.
