The 21-year-old acid attack victim from Ghaziabad, who is recuperating in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, has named a suspect who could have possibly attacked her inside her house during early hours on March 21.

Three police teams have moved out in search of the suspect who hails from Bulandshahr.

According to the family of the victim, Gulista, she finally broke down and told the name of the suspect to police during her statements on Sunday. The victim’s brother, Zahid, confirmed her statements but denied much knowledge about the man in question.

“We got no clues after detailed investigation and several teams had searched possible suspects. However, we went to the family and questioned them again. The victim finally came out with the name of the man who is now a prime suspect in the case. However, we will have to nab him and make detailed investigation before holding him accused. His call details and location will also need to be corroborated accordingly,” said Rajesh Kumar Singh, circle officer (city I).

Gulista’s family told police that she had friendly terms with the man who objected to her marriage being fixed to a man in Khurja. She got engaged recently in March and her marriage was slated to be held after April.

“It is suspected that the man may have attacked her out of frustration. We also suspect that he may be a visitor to the house earlier. The scene of crime also suggested that a number of people were present inside the house on the night of the incident. So it was not possible for any outsider to enter her house and attack her. Her family probably knew the name but did not tell it initially, maybe out of social circumstances,” Singh added.
