IndyCar drivers will throw out the welcome mat for Fernando Alonso on his Indianapolis 500 debut next month but have warned the double Formula One champion not to expect any support on the track.

“He’s going to get passed and pass more cars in one month than he will in his entire Formula One career combined,” Graham Rahal, son of 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby, said at Barber Motorsports Park. Alonso announced last week he would miss the showcase Monaco Grand Prix on May 28 to race in the Indy 500 on the same day.

It’s great to have someone here of his calibre,” Brazilian three times Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves said. “He’ll do well but I’m going to do everything I can to make him not do well.”

Chief coach Roelant Oltmans feels the Azlan Shah Cup will give a clear picture of where the Indian hockey team stands after working rigorously on the physical and mental aspects. “While getting off to a good start is important, the most important thing is the finish – in December when we really have to be good. This tournament will give us an indication on the things we expect and test ourselves to see if the progress I expect to see is on,” Oltmans said.

Grand Master Harika Dronavalli continued her good run at the Reykjavik Open, getting past Martin P Burrows of England in round four game here. With three wins and one draw in four outings, the world No 11 Indian has amassed a total of 3.5 points. She is currently placed 13th on the leader board

India teenager Velavan Senthilkumar once again lost in the summit clash to Mohd Elsherbini in the West Rand Open, a PSA world tour event, in Roodepoort, South Africa. Senthilkumar lost another opportunity to grab his maiden PSA title. He had gone down to the Egyptian in the final of the Parkview Open in Johannesburg recently.
